Critical Thinking Q&A with David Miles

February 14, 2008

Following are some of the most commonly asked questions about critical thinking, answered by David Miles, Ed.D., OI Partners – Miles LeHane Companies (Leesburg, VA):

Q: Is critical thinking really a new skill?

A: In reality, critical thinking is a blending of multiple skills that have been taught over the years. It combines analytical thinking or "understanding the problem." It also combines "diversity" in thinking such as looking at a problem from multiple perspectives. It combines flat organizations by having all members be part of the solution instead of just following a repetitive process. It also combines the speed of global business and new problems being solved from a customer focus where one answer may not serve all stakeholders.  It is the skill of being a “versatilist” (pulling it all together) and implementing a new approach where old solutions do not apply.

Q:  Can everyone be part of the critical thinking process?

A: Yes, all should become involved in contributing to solutions. Individuals can be involved at not only brainstorming or problem analysis, but at contributing some area of technical knowledge. If they are involved with reaching the goal, they should be involved in creating a solution.

Q:  Is critical thinking just another process?

A: No, in its basic form there are certain processes that help facilitate critical thinking. It is more a style of organizational culture and leadership. It is an integral part of this, and not a program or process in itself.

Q:  Can all organizations do this?

A: Probably not in the beginning. It depends on the business model, the culture and the business issues that the organization is facing. For example, some organizations work best when they are on an SOP (standard operating procedure) model. There must be a strategic fit.
